Overview

Baselodge Group is a manufacturers’ representative firm bringing together companies that need to outsource design, R&D, manufacturing, and/or related services with top suppliers that excel as outsourcing providers.

We understand the benefits and challenges of outsourcing as well as the critical nature of your supply chain. Our professional staff is committed to building lasting relationships that are mutually beneficial for our customers, our suppliers, and for Baselodge.

Why the name Baselodge?

The base lodge is the warm inviting building at the bottom of the slopes where you rest, relax, refresh, plan, coordinate with others, and from which you embark on your next challenge. Baselodge is a fitting metaphor for the calm determination required to tackle the complex issues of outsourcing.

Overview

Pharmasourcing at Baselodge Group began in 2007 to accommodate today’s dynamic pharmaceutical and nutraceutical landscape, in which drug discovery & development companies may need to leverage their core expertise to provide the infrastructure, personnel, and other resources necessary to bring a product to market. Similarly, as a sea change occurs in the manufacturing sector for large manufacturers with excess capacity, and as dedicated outsource providers seek to grow their revenues, a novel approach to connecting these members of the supply chain is being introduced into this space.

Borrowing from the mature—and established—electronics manufacturing services paradigm at Baselodge, the company is currently in the process of providing the education and information necessary to both contract manufacturers and their potential customers for the mutual benefit of these sometimes disconnected members of the supplement and drug development continuum.

Our success in pharmasourcing at Baselodge Group is based on our ability to establish business relationships among potential partners whereby both customer and supplier recognize the value of the mutually beneficial relationship. In its early stages, this requires education of customers and service suppliers of the value of the manufacturer’s representative paradigm that works exceedingly well in the analogous space of electronics manufacturing services.

If you are a drug or supplement development company in need of contract research or manufacturing services, project consultation, or if you are a contract research or manufacturing firm looking to grow your sales, please Contact Us using the link at the top of this page.

The Rep’s Role

How does a manufacturers’ representative differ from a direct sales rep?

Manufacturers’ representatives are under contract with the manufacturer to sell and service accounts in their territory. The manufacturer incurs no expense for marketing until their product is sold. The representative is then paid a commission based on the net price of the sale after the manufacturer has been paid by the customer. The biggest difference between a manufacturers’ representative and a direct sales force is the expense incurred by the manufacturer. They are obligated to pay a direct sales force whether they sell anything or not. This fixed expense is then passed on to the customer.

Isn’t it better to deal directly with the manufacturer?

We are direct extensions of our manufacturers. As commissioned sales people, we are more strongly motivated to handle all your problems in a timely manner than someone who is on salary might be. We take a very personal interest in the success of your project and are dedicated to making your experience with Baselodge Group and our manufacturers one that will keep you coming back to us for your future projects.

Aren’t a representative and a distributor the same thing?

In a word, no. Distributors may sell many different brands of any given part and keep parts in stock. A representative sells exclusively for one manufacturer and does not stock anything.

How do I know that you are a reputable company and that I can trust you?

  • Baselodge Group personnel bring more than sixteen years of professional sales experience to both customers and manufacturers.
  • We are dedicated to living up to the reputation we have built for exceptional quality and service.
  • Most of our relationships with customers are under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
  • Our desire is for a long-term mutually beneficial relationship. It can only be long-term if we rigorously keep our promises and offer outstanding customer service.

Contract Manufacturing

All companies that manufacture products must face the question “Make or buy?” There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. When companies decide that “buy” is the right decision for them, they enter the world of contract manufacturing (CM).

Outsourcing is used extensively in many different industries. A few examples are:

  • Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS)
  • Biotech & Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
  • Information technology

Here are some basic definitions of Contract Manufacturing:

  • Outsourcing; contracting a third party to manufacture some or all of a production line
  • The production of products/formulas on behalf of a client, in which the design and brand name belongs to the client.

While at one time original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and drug development companies tried to be as vertically integrated as possible, many have decided that manufacturing (at least certain types of manufacturing) is not their core competency. Instead, many companies have turned to CMs whose core competencies are specific types of manufacturing.

Here is a definition of the term Contract Manufacturer:

A company that engages in product analysis, design and development, manufacturing, testing, order fulfillment and product distribution, for another company, on a contract basis.

Allowing a CM to manufacture some or all of a product frees the OEM to operate more price competitively and to focus on the development of their intellectual property (IP), which most feel is their core and distinctive competency. Eliminating the overhead of building and maintaining their own factory, OEMs and drug development firms can put their capital to work in more profitable areas. In addition to conservation of capital, contract manufacturing allows customers to scale their production rapidly. If the customer needed 10,000 units this month, but forecasts a need for 20,000 units next month, a new forecast is submitted to the CM which drives purchasing of the raw materials and components necessary to fulfill that new order. Conversely, if the forecast drops from 10,000 units to 5,000 units, the CM is notified through a new forecast. Employment scaling up and down is reserved for the CM to manage.

What about my IP and/or formulas? CMs sign confidentiality agreements (usually wrapped into the manufacturing contracts) that protect the customer’s IP and formulas. The CM has no claim on your products. They strictly serve as your outsourced factory. Any CM that engages in illegal or unethical activity destroys their reputation and pays a very high penalty for their actions.

There are thousands of CMs offering manufacturing services in both the EMS and Pharmasourcing fields. As an independent manufacturers’ rep, Baselodge Group represents some of the most capable CMs in the world. Let us match you up with our manufacturers to provide you with a quotation for the production of your products.

Design

Design is the life-blood of great OEMs. As more and more firms have outsourced their manufacturing, they have realized that their true differentiation in the marketplace is in their intellectual property (IP) and in their design capability. At the same time, budget realities have forced many firms to hold the line on engineering staff size or even to downsize their design group. This creates a need for outside design help.

Baselodge Group does not directly represent design firms, but we have worked with several outstanding firms over the years. We know who is good and who is not so good. We are happy to recommend someone once we understand your needs. Our design partners offer design support services to augment your design team. Whether your design team needs a few resources to bridge the gap on a current project or a stand alone design group to manage your project from end-to-end, we can help.

These designers are committed to protecting your IP, understanding your requirements, designing to your specifications, and interacting with you for design reviews throughout the design cycle. They are experts on design for manufacturability (DFM), design for test (DFT), and design for cost reduction.

Leveraging An Effective Paradigm

Similarly, as a sea change occurs in the manufacturing sector for large manufacturers with excess capacity, or dedicated outsource providers seeking to grow their revenues, a novel approach to connecting these members of the supply chain was introduced into this space.

Borrowing from the mature—and established—electronics manufacturing services paradigm at Baselodge (founded by president Mark L. Casey in 2006), the company is currently in the process of providing the education and information necessary to both principals and potential customers for the mutual benefit of these sometimes disconnected members of the supplement and drug development continuum.

Our success in pharmasourcing at Baselodge Group will be based on our ability to establish business relationships among potential partners whereby both customer and supplier recognize the value of the mutually beneficial relationship. In its early stages, this will require education of customers and service suppliers of the value of the manufacturer’s representative paradigm that works exceedingly well in the analogous space of electronics manufacturing services.
